DUBLIN Nike Vapormax Bleu Pas Cher , May 17 (Xinhua) -- Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and Fine Gael (United Ireland Party) leader Enda Kenny announced on Wednesday evening that he was stepping down as party leader as of midnight Wednesday.
"Last year I indicated that I would not lead the Fine Gael party into the next general election. I have decided to implement that decision today," Kenny said in a statement issued at the Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting.
"Therefore, I will retire as leader of Fine Gael effective from midnight tonight Nike Vapormax Noir Pas Cher ," he said.
In the 2016 general election, Fine Gael didn't win an overall majority. The party then formed a minority government with independent TDs (members of parliament), with party leader Kenny serving as Prime Minister for the second time. Kenny has led the party since 2002.
Kenny has been a member of the parliament for west Ireland's County Mayo since 1975 Nike Vapormax Pas Cher , having succeeded his father Henry Kenny. He is the longest-serving lawmaker currently in the Dail Eireann, the lower house of Irish parliament.
But Kenny said he would remain on as Prime Minister until a new party leader was elected.
"I will continue to carry out my duties as party leader in an acting capacity, until my successor is elected through the Fine Gael leadership election process Nike Presto Ultra Flyknit Pas Cher ," he said.
"I have asked that the Fine Gael Executive Council expedite this process and to have it concluded by close of business on June 2. I want to assure people that throughout this internal process, I will continue to carry out my duties and responsibilities as Taoiseach in full," he added.
Kenny also said it had been a "huge honor and privilege" for him to have led the party for the past 15 years.
At the Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting Nike Presto SE Woven Pas Cher , participants gave a long standing ovation to Kenny, praising him for his remarkable service to the country and party.

A party leadership contest has officially begun. Minister for social protection Leo Varadkar and Minister for Housing Simon Coveney are widely considered the two frontrunners in the leadership race.
Education minister Richard Bruton is also reported to be assessing the possibility of entering the race.
The Fine Gael leadership will be decided by an electoral college that gives the parliamentary party -- TDs, Senators, and MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) -- 65 percent of the vote. Rank-and-file members are allocated 25 percent and councilors 10 percent.

MOSUL， Iraq， March 29 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi security forces on Wednesday pushed further toward the old city center of the western side of Mosul amid fierce clashes with Islamic State (IS) militants， the Iraqi military said.
The commandos of the Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) advanced in Yarmouk neighborhood in west of the old city center and freed most of the neighborhood after heavy back-and-forth fighting in the past few days， an army source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Elite CTS troops continued their heavy clashes against IS militants in several nearby neighborhoods， as they advanced closer to Mosul's western edge and densely populated old city center， where hundreds of thousands of civilians are believed to be still trapped under IS rule.
Meanwhile， the federal police and interior ministry special forces， known as Rapid Response， took full control over Qadheeb al-Ban area and Malab football stadium in the western edge of the old city center， after days of fierce clashes against IS militants， Lt. Gen. Raid Shakir Jawdat， commander of the federal police forces， said in a statement.
The latest advance is part of the troops efforts to besiege the extremist militants in the areas around the historical al-Nuri Mosque in the middle of Mosul's old city center， Jawdat said.
""The federal police forces are pursuing a tactic that restricting the use bombs and increasing sniper fire against terrorist militants holed up at densely populated in old city center，"" Jawdat said， adding ""the federal police artillery are only shelling selected targets on unpopulated areas.""
The troops have been fighting street by street and house by house to recapture the historical al-Nuri Mosque in the middle of Mosul's old city center， but they were slowed by the heavy resistance of IS militants and the presence of some 500，000 people living in the old houses with narrow allies.
The mosque with its famous leaning minaret， which gave the city its nickname ""al-Hadbaa"" or ""the hunchback，"" has a symbolic value as it was the place where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the cross-border ""caliphate"" in large areas in Iraq and Syria in his sole public appearance in July 2014.
Jawdat's announcement of new tactic came after media reports said that hundreds of civilians were buried under the debris of their houses by heavy bombardments of U.S.-led coalition and Iraqi aircraft during the past few days.
